Texas has taken a significant step toward improving the primary roadway serving Starbase with the inclusion of $192.4 million for widening State Highway 4 in the state's newly approved 10-year transportation plan. The funding was announced on August 26 and covers expansion of approximately 14 miles of the two-lane Boca Chica Boulevard into a divided four-lane highway between Farm-to-Market Road 1419 and LBJ Boulevard.
The project is part of the Texas Department of Transportation’s 2027 Unified Transportation Program and is scheduled to go out for construction bids in fiscal year 2027. This development follows earlier planning efforts for the corridor, which has experienced substantial increases in traffic volume in recent years.
Temporary Road Closures
During the month, State Highway 4 experienced scheduled temporary closures ordered by the City of Starbase to accommodate SpaceX spaceflight activities. Mayor's Order No. 2026-20 closed the highway and Boca Chica Beach on August 28 from 12:00 PM to 9:00 PM. Mayor's Order No. 2026-21 implemented a similar closure on August 29 from 6:30 AM to 9:00 PM.
Outside of these periods, the city reported no road delays, and Boca Chica Beach remained open to the public. Updates on access were available via text alerts to 1-866-513-3475.
