Construction on Ruth Drive in South Padre Island is progressing as crews install new storm drain lines to reduce flooding risks near Beach Access 21.
Project Details
The work, which began in June 2026, involves complete reconstruction of the road, including reclaiming right-of-ways, adding parking, enhancing pedestrian access, and improving drainage. SPI Assistant Public Works Director Jon Wilson stated, "This is a complete reconstruction of the road. We're taking the existing road out, reclaiming right-of-ways, and creating more parking and pedestrian access to the beach and improving drainage."[1]
The project is expected to take about five months to complete, weather permitting, with East Georgia Ruth Drive closed to through traffic during the work.[2]
