Developers behind a $1 billion seawater desalination facility have secured a contract for 117 acres of land along the northern end of State Highway 100.1 The site, located just south of the proposed second causeway to the mainland, positions the plant to supply high-quality water via a planned pipeline network across the region.

RGV Desal LLC Leads the Initiative

RGV Desal LLC, a joint venture between U.S. Desalination LLC and IDE Technologies, stands to benefit significantly from this development.2 The company, dedicated to delivering sustainable water solutions through advanced reverse osmosis technology, now advances toward construction of what is described as the largest water infrastructure project in South Texas history. RGV Desal's website highlights its partnership model, emphasizing collaboration with local stakeholders for long-term water reliability.

"The formation of RGV-Desal is a defining moment for water infrastructure in South Texas," said Sean Strawbridge, board chair of U.S. Desalination.3

IDE Technologies, a global leader in desalination plants, brings expertise in energy-efficient designs. The partners aim to produce up to 100 million gallons of water per day initially, with brine discharged back into the ocean.

Strategic Location and Technology

The chosen site supports efficient operations, leveraging proximity to the Gulf for intake and the causeway for distribution. Plans include integration with renewable energy to minimize environmental impact, aligning with regional sustainability goals.

Looking ahead, RGV Desal will pursue necessary permits and financing, paving the way for construction and operational phases that promise enhanced water security for local businesses and residents.
