The Texas Department of Transportation reported substantial completion of a preventive maintenance project on I-69E between Ruben Torres and State Highway 4 in August, with main travel lanes and striping now complete. Final completion, addressing punch list items such as debris clean-up and guardrail repairs, is anticipated by the end of September.[1]
Ongoing Projects and Adjustments
Work on Old Highway 77 remains underway as part of a major rebuild. City engineer Carlos Lastra noted that unexpected issues with water and sewer infrastructure led to change orders, extending the timeline. The new deadline for completion is August rather than the prior February 2027 target.[1]
Separately, the Brownsville Public Utilities Board announced a temporary closure of E. 14th Street between Cement Street and Security Drive. The closure begins at 9:00 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 5, and is expected to last until approximately 10:00 a.m. on Sunday, Sept. 6, to allow replacement of a 30-inch water main valve and installation of additional valves.[2]

Drivers are advised to expect temporary delays and use caution in active construction zones, with detours and signage posted as needed. These efforts form part of broader infrastructure improvements funded through city and utility resources.
Looking ahead, TxDOT is in the contract letting phase for additional preventive maintenance on I-69E extending northward to FM 511, with that work slated to begin in April 2028.
