Several road improvement projects are actively reshaping travel patterns in the region. The Colorado Department of Transportation's resurfacing effort on US Highway 160 from Elmore's Corner to the Durango High Bridge remains underway, featuring single-lane closures eastbound and westbound between the River Road intersection and Colorado Highway 172.[1] Crews are addressing pavement, striping, guardrails, signs, and bridge deck repairs, with most operations occurring at night to limit daytime disruptions.[2]

College Drive and 8th Avenue Safety Enhancements

Phase 2 of the College Drive and 8th Avenue Safety Project has resumed, focusing on median improvements along 3rd Avenue before advancing to 4th and 6th Avenues for ADA-compliant ramps and curb work.[1] The initiative includes lane reconfiguration, traffic signal upgrades, and pedestrian refuge islands, with work confined to weekdays from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. and no closures on College Drive itself.[3]

Other Notable Work

Wilson Gulch Drive remains fully closed from the Confluence Avenue roundabout for road and utility upgrades, maintaining trail access while paving a new two-lane roadway.[1] Utility replacements by Atmos Energy on Clovis and Arroyo Drives are progressing toward completion by mid-July. La Plata County has initiated striping operations across its roads, continuing through October.[4]

In the near term, the Schneider Park access road and parking lot will close May 4 through 8 for reconstruction, while paving and milling on County Road 250/251 at the intersection is scheduled to begin May 8 following power pole relocation.[1] These efforts signal sustained activity on key corridors into late 2026, with US 160 and Wilson Gulch projects targeting November completion.
