Northern Arizona University track and field athletes continued their dominant season with standout performances leading into postseason play. Distance runner Agnes McTighe earned Big Sky Women's Track Athlete of the Week honors for her 15:51.93 in the 5,000 meters at the Franson Last Chance meet, helping NAU claim the top seven conference times in the event.[1] The Lumberjacks, fresh off Big Sky titles in cross country and indoor track, head to the outdoor championships in Portland, Oregon, as favorites in a competitive women's team race.[2]

In golf, the NAU women's team qualified for NCAA Regionals in Waco, Texas, marking their first appearance in four years after winning the Big Sky Conference Championship.[3] Locally, Flagstaff High School's Eagles track teams excelled at the Division III state championships, securing four gold medals and 16 top-three finishes overall. The boys placed third with 66.5 points, while the girls finished sixth at 36.5 points.[4]

Adventure and Youth Events Draw Crowds

Overland Expo West returns to Fort Tuthill County Park May 15-17, featuring over 400 exhibitors, 175 classes, and thousands of attendees focused on off-road vehicles, motorcycles, and adventure gear. Past editions have drawn up to 28,000 visitors, providing significant opportunities for local businesses through lodging, dining, and retail spending.[5][6] The event underscores Flagstaff's appeal for motorsports and outdoor enthusiasts during transitional months.

The Triple Crown Sports Memorial Day Classic baseball tournament follows May 23-25, a ring event for youth teams ages 9-14 with a four-game guarantee on local fields. Such regional tournaments attract visiting families, bolstering hotel occupancy and vendor sales while mitigating slower periods.[7]

Smaller events like Ride Your Bike Week (May 10-16), Taco 'Bout Fun Run (May 16), and Flagstaff Doggie Dash Ultra (May 24) round out a robust schedule, fostering community engagement and incremental revenue streams.[8] As these gatherings demonstrate steady participation, expanding youth and adventure sports programming could stabilize off-peak economics by drawing consistent regional audiences.
