The City of Decatur has opened bidding for the general construction package of its new Softball Complex, with proposals due by May 8. Issued just before the start of the month, this project seeks contractors for comprehensive construction work, demonstrating ongoing municipal investment in recreational infrastructure that relies on skilled trades.

Statewide Support for Niche Skills

Alabama community colleges launched a $100,000 scholarship program targeting careers in aviation mechanics, avionics, construction management, welding, pipefitting, HVAC/R technology, carpentry, electrical work and plumbing. Applications opened on May 4, offering $2,000 awards to 50 eligible students, including high school seniors in dual enrollment programs.1

These initiatives coincide with active city efforts, including an ongoing $8 million streetscape project on 6th Avenue funded by a federal grant. Contractors are currently installing curbs, sidewalks, pavers and lighting, with key intersection work nearing completion.2

Historic District Grants Available

The city continues to accept applications for its Historic Rehabilitation Program grants through May 29, targeting facade improvements in designated historic districts. Eligible properties may spur demand for specialized renovation trades.

With bid deadlines and scholarship windows closing soon, contractors and trainees can position for contracts and training that address local capacity needs. Upcoming awards from these processes may catalyze further private sector engagement in niche trades.
