Bastrop officials are evaluating a $5 million project to upgrade Wastewater Treatment Plant No. 3 with advanced technology capable of producing reusable water.

The upgrade aims to address plant performance issues and meet stricter environmental standards from the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality regarding phosphate limits. City Manager Sylvia Carrillo-Trevino noted that the system would allow treated discharge to be reused for irrigation or commercial purposes.
Traditional upgrades to meet discharge standards were estimated at $1.8 million to $2.7 million, but the new approach was presented as necessary to prevent the plant from becoming obsolete.
