The US 160 Pagosa Springs Reconstruction project, managed by the Colorado Department of Transportation and contractor WW Clyde, continues through downtown with a focus on utility replacements, ADA improvements, and transition to a concrete roadway surface. Valued at $24.5 million, the work spans from milepost 142 to 144 and is slated for completion in November 2026.[1]

Key Traffic Changes and Progress

South 2nd Street reopened on May 1 following subgrade preparation and concrete paving, with access maintained via Hot Springs Boulevard and Hermosa Street during the closure.[2] Concrete blankets now protect curing pavement along US 160, signaling advancing paving efforts.[3]

The Lewis Street and US 160 intersection closure persists for demolition and replacement of geothermal, water, and sewer lines, along with new ADA-accessible curbs, gutters, and paving. This challenging phase is expected to extend until late May or early June, with detours via 4th, 7th, and 8th streets recommended for local businesses. Left-turn signals at 4th Street have been extended to aid navigation.[3]

Forecasted inclement weather delayed excavation, utility work, and paving at the dogleg near the former courthouse corner, now set to commence May 4. Operations will run 24 hours a day, seven days a week, reducing traffic to one alternating lane for approximately two weeks and causing delays.[4] Pedestrians must use designated crossings where barriers have been removed from completed sidewalks, and Pagosa Springs Middle School has shifted drop-off points to prioritize safety amid construction.[3]

As work progresses into late spring, crews will reverse the prior year's traffic shift to address south-side lanes, incorporating night operations where feasible to minimize disruptions. The Lewis Street utilities phase will transition into paving, setting the stage for further downtown enhancements through summer, with full project wrap-up by fall.[1]
